  10.        The software MPEG and Cinepak compressors included in the
  11.        IRIS Digital Media Execution Environment require software
  12.        licenses in order to operate.  This chapter defines some
  13.        important software licensing terms, describes the basic
  14.        procedure for obtaining, installing, and testing a software
  15.        licenses for the MPEG and Cinepak Encoders, and lists
  16.        addresses and phone numbers that you can use to contact
  17.        Silicon Graphics License Administration.
  18.  
  19.        For more information about software licenses, see the
  20.        _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _L_i_c_e_n_s_e _S_y_s_t_e_m _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e, which provides
  21.        detailed information on obtaining, installing, using, and
  22.        administering software licenses.  It is included in the
  23.        system software documentation; the online version is in the
  24.        subsystem _n_e_t_l_s__e_o_e._b_o_o_k_s._N_e_t_L_S.

  26.        10.1  _A__F_e_w__D_e_f_i_n_i_t_i_o_n_s
  27.  
  28.        A _s_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _l_i_c_e_n_s_e is a collection of information that,
  29.        after installation, allows you to use a licensed software
  30.        product on one or more systems.  The software license
  31.        information includes the license type, the license
  32.        expiration date, a license password, and system
  33.        identification numbers (_s_y_s_i_n_f_o and serial numbers).  You
  34.        can get a system's sysinfo number by giving the command
  35.        /etc/sysinfo -s.  The license must be installed on the
  36.        system that has the sysinfo number included in the software
  37.        license information.  If the sysinfo is ``Any,'' the
  38.        software license can be installed on any system.

  40.        There are two types of software licenses, _n_o_d_e-_l_o_c_k_e_d and
  41.        _c_o_n_c_u_r_r_e_n_t, and two durations of software licenses,
  42.        _t_e_m_p_o_r_a_r_y and _p_e_r_m_a_n_e_n_t:
  43.  
  44.        node-locked  A node-locked license is installed on a
  45.                     particular system (node) and allows the
  46.                     licensed software to run on that system.
  47.  
  48.        concurrent   A concurrent license allows the licensed
  49.                     software to run on one or more systems in the
  50.                     network simultaneously.  The number of systems
  51.                     (nodes) allowed is included in the software
  52.                     license information.  The system on which a
  53.                     concurrent license is installed must be
  54.                     configured as a Network License Server.  Any
  55.                     system on the same network must be configured
  56.                     as a Global Location Broker.  (See the _N_e_t_w_o_r_k

  76.        temporary    A temporary license allows you to use the
  77.                     licensed software for a short period, typically
  78.                     a week to several months.  The expiration date
  79.                     tells you the last date on which you can use
  80.                     the licensed software.  Temporary licenses are
  81.                     often shipped with software so that you can use
  82.                     the software before a permanent license is
  83.                     issued.

  85.        permanent    A permanent license allows you to use this
  86.                     release of the licensed software for a very
  87.                     long time.  For example, an expiration date in
  88.                     the year 2038 indicates a permanent license.
  89.                     Permanent licenses are issued only for software
  90.                     that has been purchased.

  92.        10.2  _O_b_t_a_i_n_i_n_g__a_n_d__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g__a__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e__L_i_c_e_n_s_e

  94.        This section explains the procedure for obtaining and
  95.        installing a software license:  checking to see if you have
  96.        received software license information, determining if you
  97.        need to install a license, requesting software license
  98.        information if you need it, identifying the system on which
  99.        you will install the license, installing the software
  100.        license information, and verifying that the license is
  101.        working.

  103.          1.  Check to see if you have received software license
  104.              information.
  105.  
  106.              Software license information is distributed in several
  107.              ways:  on labels attached to a Software License
  108.              Registration card, on sheets of paper included with
  109.              the product, or by mail, FAX, or electronic mail.

  111.          2.  Determine if you need to install a software license.
  112.  
  113.              You may or may not need to install software licenses
  114.              for the MPEG Encoder and Cinepak Encoder:
  115.  
  116.                 +o If you are simply updating your system to this
  117.                   release of the IRIS Digital Media Execution
  118.                   Environment and IRIS Digital Media Tools, you may
  119.                   not need to install a new license at this time;
  120.                   your already-installed license may continue to
  121.                   work.

  123.                 +o If you have received both a temporary license and
  124.                   a permanent software license, install the

  143.                 +o If you have received a permanent license, you
  144.                   should install it because it enables you to use
  145.                   the software that you have purchased.

  147.                 +o If concurrent licenses are used at your site and
  148.                   you plan to use an already-installed license, you
  149.                   can install and use the licensed software on your
  150.                   system without installing a license.
  151.  
  152.                 +o If you have received a temporary software license
  153.                   and do not need to use the software immediately,
  154.                   you may choose to wait to install a license until
  155.                   you obtain the permanent license.
  156.  
  157.          3.  Request a software license if you don't have a
  158.              software license at all, or if you have a temporary
  159.              license and need a permanent license.
  160.  
  161.              To obtain a software license, fill out the Software
  162.              License Registration card that was included with the
  163.              software (or the replica in the _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _L_i_c_e_n_s_e _S_y_s_t_e_m
  164.              _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e).  Send the information or the
  165.              card by electronic mail (preferred), FAX, or mail to
  166.              Silicon Graphics License Administration or your local
  167.              service provider (see the next section for addresses).
  168.              After your request is received by Silicon Graphics or
  169.              your local service provider, you should receive a
  170.              software license within two business days.

  172.          4.  Identify the system on which you will install the
  173.              software license.
  174.  
  175.              Because software license information usually must be
  176.              installed on a particular system, follow these
  177.              guidelines:
  178.  
  179.                 +o If the sysinfo is a number, identify the system
  180.                   that returns that number as the output of the
  181.                   command /etc/sysinfo -s.  (It may be easier to
  182.                   identify the system using the serial number,
  183.                   which is included in the software license
  184.                   information.)

  186.                 +o If the sysinfo is ``Any,'' you can install the
  187.                   license on any system you choose.
  188.  
  189.                 +o If the sysinfo number included with the software
  190.                   license information doesn't match the sysinfo
  191.

  207.                   the license, contact Silicon Graphics License
  208.                   Administration.

  210.          5.  Install the software license (temporary or permanent).
  211.  
  212.              Check the ``license type'' listed in the software
  213.              license information to find out whether the license is
  214.              a node-locked license or a concurrent license.  The
  215.              installation procedure depends on the license type:
  216.  
  217.                 +o If it is a node-locked license, see Chapter 3,
  218.                   ``Installing Node-locked Licenses,'' in the
  219.                   _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _L_i_c_e_n_s_e _S_y_s_t_e_m _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for
  220.                   instructions on installing the license.

  222.                 +o If the license is a concurrent license, you may
  223.                   need to configure the system on which you plan to
  224.                   install the license as a Network License Server.
  225.                   If there is no Global Location Broker on your
  226.                   network, you must set up a system as a Global
  227.                   Location Broker, too.  See Chapter 4, ``Setting
  228.                   Up Global Location Brokers and Network License
  229.                   Servers,'' of the _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _L_i_c_e_n_s_e _S_y_s_t_e_m
  230.                   _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for instructions.  After the
  231.                   Network License Server and Global Location Broker
  232.                   are set up, follow the instructions in Chapter 5,
  233.                   ``Installing Concurrent Licenses,'' of the same
  234.                   guide to install the license on the Network
  235.                   License Server.

  237.          6.  Verify that the software license has been successfully
  238.              installed.
  239.  
  240.              To verify that the software license is working, try
  241.              creating an MPEG file or a QuickTime Cinepak file
  242.              using the digital media file conversion program
  243.              _d_m_c_o_n_v_e_r_t(_1) which is installed from
  244.              _d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._u_t_i_l_i_t_i_e_s.

  246.              If you installed a temporary license and you are
  247.              entitled to a permanent license, replace the temporary
  248.              license with a permanent license as soon as possible
  249.              to ensure uninterrupted use of the Silicon Graphics
  250.              MPEG Encoder or Silicon Graphics Cinepak Encoder.
